- Educational Qualification: High Second Class (at least 55%) in Post-Graduation in History, Economics, or Social Sciences.
- Social Sciences Subjects: Anthropology, Geography, Philosophy, Political Science & International Relations, Psychology, and Sociology.
- Nationality: Must be a citizen of India.
- Desirable: Preference of 10 marks for candidates with at least 2 years of research experience from a recognized university or Social Research Institute.

The selection process consists of three successive stages. Candidates must clear the minimum qualifying marks in each stage to proceed.
1. Preliminary Examination (Objective)
- Subject: General Studies
- Marks: 150 | Duration: 2 Hours
- Qualifying Marks: UR: 40%, BC: 36.5%, EBC: 34%, SC/ST/Women/PwBD: 32%
2. Main Examination (Subjective)
- General Hindi: 100 Marks (Qualifying - 40 Marks)
- General English: 100 Marks (Qualifying - 40 Marks)
- General Studies Paper-1: 300 Marks
- General Studies Paper-2: 300 Marks
- Optional Subject: 300 Marks (One subject from History, Economics, Anthropology, Geography, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology)
3. Interview & Preference
- Interview: 110 Marks
- Research Experience Preference: 10 Marks (Total Interview Score: 120)
